(111.) Daruma
Someone got my bones, someone got my flesh, someone got my marrow, someone got my skin—
so what is left? Just my breath for you.

Kyoto’s Dragon Mountain Master Mukai painted and inscribed this

Daruma had four main disciples, each with a different level of attainment: skin, flesh, bone, marrow. Hukei got the marrow (by simply bowing to the master without saying anything about his understanding of Zen) and thus became the second Zen patriarch. This painting, however, tells us that we should take Daruma’s breath, his ki, his energy, his insight and make it part of our own being.

Kono Mukai (1864-1935) was abbot of Tenryu-ji in Kyoto.
Mukai was famous for his Daruma portraits—he painted the Grand Patriarch of Zen as both a man and woman. This is one of his best pieces, with original mounting.
