(123). Landscape
Hidemaru Deguchi
This is a beautiful little scroll brushed by Deguchi Hidemaru
(1897-1991). Hidemaru was one of the early leaders of the
Omoto-kyo movement. Hidemaru was friend and advisor to Ueshiba
Morihei, the founder of Aikido, and they worked closely
together. Hidemaru was imprisoned for four years during
the suppression of the Omoto-kyo during World War II, and
severely tortured. As a consequence, Hidemaru had a nervous
breakdown and lived in quiet retirement after his release
from prison. He spent the rest of his long life devoted to the fine
arts: painting, calligraphy, poetry, pottery making. Hidemaru's
brushwork is especially admired for its purity and simplicity.
