(125) Two Line Calligraphy
Yamaoka Tesshu
Tesshu (1836-1888)

Green pines flourish even where people come to live;
Flowing water no-mindedly goes where it wants.
Brushed by Tesshu Koji

This verse refers to the irrepressible freedom and power of nature. Nice, unusual mounting, and the paper is suitably aged and bug eaten. The scroll dates from Tesshu’s earlier period when his dynamic brushwork was most energetic. Outstanding example of a Tesshu two line calligraphy. Second mounting.
