(128) KATZU Daruma
Ohira Zenzo
This is a huge and impressive Daruma painting with a new
mounting. KATZU is the Zen shout of enlightenment. It is
by Ohira Zenzo (1874-1952) a kyudo master who signed himself
the “Shooting (the arrow) Buddha.” Zenzo was
very similar to Awa Kenzo, the kyudo master from the classic
Zen in the Art of Archery. Both combined Zen elements
with their teachings of the bow. Zenzo retired from business
in his late fifties and devoted himself to teaching Zen
archery and painting Zenga in the rough Nantembo style.
